Top 10 weddings of 2015

As 2015 nears an end, Yahoo Singapore looks back at some of the year’s most glamourous celebrity weddings.

10. George Young and Janet Hsieh (January 2015)

They got together in 2013 and got married in January – in Antarctica, of all places.

Then again, you’d expect nothing less from the ridiculously photogenic pairing of Singapore based actor George Young and Taiwanese-American travel host Janet Hsieh.

The pair announced their nuptials on their social media accounts: Hsieh and Young posted a photo of themselves holding a “Just Married” sign in the South Pole, amid penguins. Along the way, they kayaked in freezing waters and chased whales, documenting all for a special series which airs this month on the TLC channel.

9. Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis (July 4 2015)
They met in 1998 while filming popular sitcom That 70s Show but only began dating in April 2012.

The couple got engaged in February 2014 and welcomed their daughter – named Wyatt Isabelle – that same year.

Kutcher, who was previously married to Demi Moore, seems to be ecstatic in his new role as husband and dad.

“The most amazing thing about having a baby is my partner, Mila. She’s the greatest mom,” the 37-year-old actor told talk show host Ellen DeGeneres recently. “Like I go to work every day and I come home and she’s perfect. And it just seems like everything went amazing.”

8. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard (Feb 3 2015)
They legally tied the knot in Los Angeles on Feb 3 but by the weekend Johnny Depp and his bride Amber Heard had a second ceremony… at the 52-year-old actor’s private island in the Bahamas.

It was just the kind of tropical wedding you’d expect from Captain Jack Sparrow.

"Johnny’s private island is a tropical paradise. Wedding guests were treated to an amazing weekend that ended with a romantic beach ceremony,” a source told entertainment magazine People. “Guests relaxed on the beaches, had fun snorkeling and enjoyed food cooked by private chefs. Everyone seemed to have the best time. It was a very celebratory vibe.”

Depp met Heard, 28, on the set of The Rum Diary in 2010, after the former broke up with his longtime partner Vanessa Paradis.

7. Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter (Feb 14 2015)
On Valentine’s Day, English playwright and director Sophie Hunter became one of the most envied women in the world.

Why? She married heartthrob Benedict Cumberbatch, of course.

The 39-year-old actor is one of the most famous faces in the world and maybe best known for playing Sherlock Holmes on the hit BBC TV series, Sherlock.

On Feb 14, the couple tied the knot at the St. Peter and St. Paul Church on the Isle of Wight, England. They welcomed their son – named Christopher Walton – in June.

6. Taufik Batisah and Sheena Akbal (Apr 4 2015)

More than 2000 people gathered at a rooftop venure in Bendemeer in April for one very grand wedding: The nuptials of Singapore Idol winner Taufik Batisah and his bride Sheena Akbal.

Stars from both sides of the Causeway attended the lavish affair. At the reception, the 33-year-old singer revealed that he had proposed to his 31-year-old bride with a song some years earlier.

Acording to media reports, the couple have been friends for a long time, even before Taufik joined the Singapore Idol talent competition in 2004.

5. Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux (Aug 5 2015)
In August, Jennifer Aniston’s friends and family gathered at her home in Bel-Air, California for a supposed birthday party.

The star-studded guest list included Friends pals Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow, as well as actors Jason Bateman, Emily Blunt and Tobey Maguire.

Only it wasn’t a birthday party.

Instead, they found out that 46-year-old Aniston and 43-year-old Justin Theroux – her beau since 2011 – were getting hitched.

It’s the first marriage for Theroux – an actor and screenwriter – while it’s the second one Aniston, who was married to Brad Pitt for five years.

4. Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello (Nov 22 2015)

Actors Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello tied the knot in Florida in November. The US$3 million wedding bash lasted three days and featured a who’s who on the guest list: Channing Tatum, Reese Witherspoon and Vergara’s Modern family co-star Julie Bowan were among those who attended. The couple’s wedding comes nearly a year after their December 2014 engagement during a vacation in Hawaii. Vergara, 43, was introduced to 38-year-old Manganiello by her Modern Family costar Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and the two began dating in July of that year. Pictures of Vergara walking down the aisle in a custom hand embroidered gown by Zuhair Murad and $7 million drop diamond earrings were also posted on her social media account.

3. Mary Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy (Nov 27 2015)
This former child star turned fashion designer got hitched to 46-year-old French banker (and half brother to former French president Nicolas Sarkozy) in an intimate ceremony in Manhattan, reported US tabloid the New York Post.

The duo, who got engaged in 2014, apparently also have a shared love for cigarettes. According to the tabloid, the party décor consisted of “bowls and bowls filled with cigarettes, and everyone smoked the whole night.”

All attendees were also required to turn off their cell phones before the event, reports indicated.

This is the first wedding for Olsen, 29, while Sarkozy has two kids from a previous marriage.

2. Jay Chou and Hannah Quinlivan (married Jan 18 2015)

He always said he’d get married at 35. Looks like Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou kept his word.

On the eve of his 36th birthday, Chou walked down the isle with 21-year-old model Hannah Quinlivan in a lavish European-themed wedding held in an 11th-century church in northern England.

The exclusivity of the event also meant only close friends and family members made the invite list, according to Chinese media.

The price tag for this fairy tale affair? A cool S$1 million, estimates Hong Kong based tabloid Apple Daily.

Two other wedding banquets were held in Taipei (on Feb 9) and the Gold Coast, Australia (on Mar 9) for family members who couldn’t make it to England. How sweet.

1. Angela Yeung (Angelababy) and Huang Xiaoming (Oct 8 2015)

When wedding bells rang for the “Kim Kardashian of China” in October, they came with a hefty price tag.

This ridiculously lavish wedding cost actress/singer/model Angela Yeung (better known by her stage name Angelababy) and her actor husband Huang Xiaming nearly S$43.6 million.

Never mind that sponsors forked out most of the cost, it was a ceremony to impress the masses.

More than 2,000 guests gathered at the Shanghai Exhibition Center, which was decorated with thousands upon thousands of roses.

The 26-year-old bride wore a haute couture dress by Dior that took five months to create and consisted of 115 feet of satin organza, 170 feet of tulle crafted into seven skirt layers, and a 10 foot long train.

There were also three oufit changes, a holographic castle (because Angelababy likes them), one swanky tiara and even a carousel cake.

Security was, not surprisingly, super tight: They were reportedly more than 200 security personnel employed, including four safe deposit boxes to transport red packets from the guests.
